He was born in 1881 in Saloni ca, then an Ottoma n city, now in Greece . His father Ali Riza, a custom s offici al turned lumber mercha nt, died when Mustaf a was still a boy. His mother Zubeyd e, a devout and strong-willed woman, raised him and his sister . First enroll ed in a tradit ional religi ous school, Mustaf a soon switch ed to a modern one. In 1893, he entere d a milita ry high school where his mathem atics teache r gave him the second name Kemal, which means perfec tion, in recogn ition of young Mustaf as superi or achiev ement. He was therea fter known as Mustaf a Kemal. MUSTAF A KEMAL ATATUR K On a day of 1881, a male child was born in a pink house locate d at the distri ct of Ahmet Subaşı, city of Saloni ka, which is inside Greek bounda ries today. Father Ali Rıza whispe red the name of the child to his ear. "MUSTAF A." Before Mustaf a ,Zübeyde Hanım and Ali Rıza Bey had three childr en named Fatma,Ömer and Ahmet. When Mustaf a was born none of those childr en were alive. Mother Zübeyde Hanım was a pretty Turkme n woman strict ly devote d to religi ous belief s.The ancest ors of Zübeyde Hanım were known as a branch of Turkme n tribe. They immigr ated from Anatol ia to Rumeli a during the conque st of Rumeli a by the Ottoma ns and settle d in Sarıgöl subdis trict locate d west of the Vodina distri ct in west Makedo nia. It is though t that this tribe came there from Konya or Aydın provin ces of Anatol ia. Father Ali Rıza was a reside nt of Saloni ka and his father was Ahmet Efendi .His uncle Hafız Ahmet Efendi, a teache r in the distri ct school, was nickna med as "Red Hafız Efendi" becaus e of his red beard. At the time, Father Ali Rıza was workin g as a custom s office r. Later, he quit and establ ished a partne rship with a timber trader Cafer Efendi . He was also involv ed with brine tradin g for some time. Ali Rıza passed away at the young age of 47. What were left from Ali Rıza Bey to Zübeyde was two mecidi yes (40 kuruş) idow salary,7 year old Mustaf a and his sister Makbul e. SCHOOL YEARS Mustaf a starte d school while his father was still alive. Ali Rıza Beys desire was to send Mustaf a to the newly-opened Şemsi Efendi school so that he would get a contem porary educat ion althou gh Zübeyde Hanım wanted him to attend a tradit ional school where mostly prayer s and hymns were taught . This caused argume nts inside the family and eventu ally a concen sus was reache d. Mustaf a put on his brand new clothe s , grabbe d his embroi dered bag with the Holy Koran inside and starte d the tradit ional school, follow ing his mother s wish, with a tradit ional ceremo ny accomp anied with prayer s and hymns. Howeve r, just a few days later, he change d his mind and starte d Şemsi Efendi school . In this way, he manage d to make both Zübeyde Hanım and Ali Rıza Bey happy. Mustaf a Kemal had to be indebt ed to his father for it was him who opened his sons path with modern and contem porary ideas. Howeve r, unfort unatel y Ali Rıza Bey would not be able to see the succes s of his son Mustaf a "RISING OVER ANATOL IA LIKE THE SUN." Ali Rıza Beys death in the Novemb er of 1893 due to appare nt econom ical inconv enienc es made it imposs ible for the remain ing family member s to live in Saloni ka. Thus, Zübeyde Hanım went to Rapla farm by Langaz a near Saloni ka where her mother Ayşe Hanıms stepbr other Hüseyin Ağa was workin g as the stewar d. Hüseyin Ağa took good care of Zübeyde Hanım and the childr en but Mustaf a did not want to stay in the farm for a long time. HIS AMBITI ON WAS TO GET A GOOD EDUCAT ION AND BE A GREAT MAN A decisi on was made to return to Saloni ka where Mustaf a began to attend a second ary civil servan t school . Howeve r, things were not fine. One day, he was severe ly punish ed by his teache r "Kaymak Hafız Efendi" for he had quarre led with one of his classm ates. He was also in a contin uous disagr eement with one of the other teache rs "Copur Hafız Nuri Efendi". All these events drove him to extrem e furios ity and made him quit the school . This event was one of the milest ones in his life. He made the decisi on to choose his real place: the Milita ry. MILITA RY LIFE It is not possib le to think the armed forces s and the nation as sepera te. When the nation falled into troubl e, the armed forces assist ed the state and the nation . The armed forces always have been one of the founda tion stones for the state and the nation in the histor y of the Turks.
