Ability ( can, could, be able to) yetenek -(ebilmek)

Could “can” in geçmiş zaman halidir. Bütün şahıslar için değişikliğe uğramadan “could” kullanılır. Soru yaparken could özneden önce getirilir. Olumsuz yapmak için not eklemek kafidir. Kısaltması couldn’t tır. Daima fiillerin 1. halleri ile kullanılır.

Bütün şahıslar için değişikliğe uğramadan could have kullanılır. Olumsuz yaparken could ile have arasına not getirilir. Kısaltması couldn’t have dir. Soru yaparken could özneden önce getirilir. Could have ile kullanılan fiiller daima 3. halde olurlar.

Geçmiş zamanda genelde yapılabilen olaylarda yetenek ifade etmek için could ve be able to birbirinin yerine aynen kullanılabilir.

I could ride a bicycle when I was six. Altı yaşındayken bisiklet sürebiliyordum.
Was your grandfather able to drive a car?​

Fakat geçmişte bir kereye mahsus olmak üzere uğraşılarak yapılan işlerde yetenek ifade etmek için could kullanılmaz, be able to veya managed to kullanılır.
The table was very heavy. But the woman was able to lift it. Masa ağırda ama kadın kaldırabildi.
It was to foggy yesterday. Were you able to drive to school? Dün hava çok sisliydi. Okula arabayla gidebildin mi?
Bu iki cümlede could kullanılmaz.

Duyu organlarının yaptığı fiillerde bir kereye mahsus olsa bile could aynen be able to ve managed to gibi kullanılır.

Geçmiş zamanda olumsuz cümle ve sorulardaki yetenekleri ifade etmede couldn’t veya weren’t/wasn’t able to kullanılır. Genelde olan işler veya bir kereye mahsus olmak üzere yapılan işler diye bir ayırım yoktur.

My brother couldn’t swim when he was twelve.
My brother wasn’t able to swim when he was twelve. Kardeşim 12 yaşındayken yüzemiyordu.
Couldn’t the boy open the door this morning?​

Wasn’t the boy able to open the door this morning? Çocuk bu sabah kapıyı açamadı mı?​

Gelecek zamanda olumlu, olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde yetenekler sadece be able to ile ifade edilir.
The teacher wil be able to rest after school. Öğretmen okuldan sonra dinlenecek.
I won’t be able to read anymore. Artık okuyamayacağım.

Present Perfect ve Past Perfect‘te olumlu, olumsuz ve soru cümlelerinde yetenekler yine be able to ile ifade edilir.

My daughter has been able to speak for three days. Kızım 3 gündür konuşabiliyor.
They hadn’t been able to leave the house until their father came. Babaları gelinceye kadar evden ayrılmamışlardı.

Geçmişte gerçekleşmemiş olayları anlatmada could have done kullanılır. Burada yine yetenek söz konusudur. Burada done ile kastedilen fiilin 3. halidir.
